Brief job description

The Medical School of East-West University is looking for qualified clinicians and clinical education specialists to perform the role of examiners in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). OSCE examiners assess medical students' clinical competencies - including history taking, physical examination, communication skills, clinical reasoning, and practical (procedural) skills - during a practical exam at designated stations. Examiners play a crucial role in ensuring that the assessment is fair, standardized, and reflects the competencies required for safe clinical practice.

Key responsibilities

• Attend a mandatory pre-exam briefing and calibration/training session to familiarize yourself with the station's clinical scenario, checklists, and assessment criteria.
• Observe and objectively assess each candidate at their OSCE station, using provided standardized checklists and assessment scales.
• Apply assessment criteria equally and impartially to all candidates passing through the station, without giving hints, assistance, or verbal/non-verbal feedback during the exam.
• Accurately manage the station's time limit.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of the exam content, scenarios, and candidate results before, during, and after the exam.
• Complete and submit all assessment forms, checklists, and, if necessary, incident or breach reports in a timely manner.
• Collaborate professionally with standardized/simulated patients, exam supervisors, and administrative staff.
• Immediately inform the OSCE coordinator of any concerns related to exam irregularities, candidate breaches of professional ethics, or patient safety.
• Provide brief written or oral feedback on station design or unclear checklist points during post-exam discussions, if requested.

Qualification requirements

• A medical degree (MD) or an equivalent qualification; experience in clinical practice, either current or in the past, in a relevant specialty is desirable.

• Active involvement in clinical teaching, residency training, or medical education will be considered an advantage.

• Previous experience as an OSCE examiner, clinical skills instructor, or exam supervisor is desirable but not essential.

• Well-developed observation skills and the ability to apply standardized assessment criteria objectively and consistently.

• Punctuality and availability throughout the entire exam session (usually 3-6 hours, including briefing).

• High-level proficiency in the exam language (English).

• Willingness to sign a confidentiality and conflict of interest agreement before each exam cycle.

Working Conditions

OSCE examiners work at the University's Clinical Skills Center during pre-scheduled exam periods, which typically occur several times throughout the academic year (mid-term and final exams). Employment is on a per-exam-cycle basis; permanent or annual employment is not guaranteed. Examiners are required to remain at their assigned station throughout the session and may be required to examine consecutive rotations of candidates.
